
A dive light does two jobs, and only one of them is obvious. The obvious one: it lets you see in the dark, on a night dive or deep in an overhang. The less obvious one, and arguably the more important: itโs a safety and signalling tool that a serious diver carries on almost every dive, day or night. Colour comes back under a beam. You can peer into holes and cracks where the interesting animals hide. And you can signal your buddy when words arenโt an option.
Which is a long way of saying that โwhich dive light should I buy?โ is a better question than most new divers realise, and the honest answer is usually โmore than one.โ Hereโs how to choose.
The numbers that actually matter
Dive light spec sheets throw a few figures at you. Three are worth understanding; the rest is mostly noise.
Lumens (brightness). This is the headline number, and like most headline numbers itโs over-weighted. More lumens is brighter, yes, but brighter isnโt automatically better โ a blindingly bright light in clear, close water can actually reflect back off particles and hurt your vision, and it burns battery faster. What you want is enough brightness for your conditions, not the biggest number on the shelf.
Beam angle. This matters more than people expect. A narrow, tight beam punches through water and is great for signalling and for picking out detail at a distance โ itโs the classic primary-light beam. A wide beam floods a larger area with softer light, which is what you want for video, for lighting up a scene, or for general awareness. Some lights offer both. Think about what youโre actually doing with the light before you fixate on brightness.
Burn time. How long the light runs on a charge. This is the boring spec that ruins dives when ignored. A bright light with a short burn time that dies mid-dive is worse than a modest light that lasts. Match burn time to your dive lengths, with margin to spare, and factor in how you charge it โ rechargeable is standard now and worth it.
Primary and backup: why one light isnโt enough
Hereโs the rule that matters most, and itโs not about specs at all: if you are relying on a light โ on a night dive, in an overhead, anywhere you genuinely need to see โ you carry a backup. Full stop.
Lights fail. Batteries die, seals leak, electronics quit, and they always seem to do it at the worst moment. A night dive with a single light that fails is a genuinely bad situation. So the serious diverโs kit is a primary light โ brighter, your main tool โ plus at least one backup that lives clipped off and ready, small and reliable, there purely to get you through if the primary dies. This isnโt gear-shop upselling; itโs basic risk management, and itโs standard practice for a reason.
For casual daytime use where the light is a nice-to-have rather than a need-to-have, you can be more relaxed. The moment the light becomes something youโre depending on, the backup stops being optional.
Matching the light to your diving
Recreational and daytime use
If you mostly dive in daylight and want a light for peering into crevices, restoring colour, and the occasional dusk or night dive, a good compact recreational light is your friend. Reliable, pocketable, bright enough โ you donโt need a cave-grade cannon for this, and a handy backup is easy to carry alongside it.
Night diving
Here you want a proper primary with a good beam and solid burn time, plus a dependable backup, every single time. If night diving is becoming your thing, itโs worth buying a light built for the job rather than making a general-purpose torch stretch to cover it.
Technical, cave and overhead
This is a different tier. Overhead divers typically run a powerful primary โ often a canister light with a tight signalling beam โ and two independent backups, because in an environment with no direct route to the surface, light is life and redundancy is non-negotiable. Shooting underwater is its own case โ here youโre usually after wide, even, colour-accurate light to illuminate a scene rather than a tight beam to see or signal with, and thatโs a different category of tool again.

A few honest donโts
Donโt buy purely on lumens; a well-designed beam at moderate brightness beats a poorly-designed bright one. Donโt skip the backup to save money on a night or overhead dive โ thatโs the one corner you never cut. And donโt forget that a light is a sealed, battery-powered device that needs care: rinse it, look after the o-rings, and donโt open a flooded-feeling light at depth. Treated well, a good light lasts years.
